Sarajevo is small enough to explore on foot, but it has so many layers of history that it is easy to underestimate how much there is to see. So how many days do you need in Sarajevo? Two full days is ideal for most travelers. One day covers the highlights if you are short on time, and three days lets you add nature and a day trip. Below are simple itineraries for each option, written by our local guides.

Sarajevo in 1 day

With one day, focus on the Old Town in the morning and the siege history in the afternoon.

  • Morning: Baščaršija and the Old Town. Start at the Sebilj fountain, walk the old bazaar streets, visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and see the Latin Bridge, where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914. Follow Ferhadija street to the spot where Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Sarajevo meet.
  • Lunch: ćevapi or burek in Baščaršija, followed by a traditional Bosnian coffee.
  • Afternoon: siege history. Visit the Tunnel of Hope, drive along the former Sniper Alley and see the city from the Yellow Fortress at sunset.

Doing this on your own means a lot of taxis and planning. Our Sarajevo Grand Tour covers all of it in 5 hours with hotel pickup, the tunnel ticket and Bosnian coffee included.

Sarajevo in 2 days

Two days lets you slow down and see the city properly.

Day 1: Old Town and city life

  • A guided Sarajevo Walking Tour in the morning to understand the city’s history and religions.
  • Visit City Hall (Vijećnica), the Catholic Cathedral and the Old Orthodox Church.
  • Evening in Baščaršija, with dinner and a view over the rooftops.

Day 2: War history and Olympic Trebević

  • The Tunnel of Hope museum.
  • The abandoned 1984 Winter Olympics bobsleigh track on Mount Trebević, now covered in graffiti, with views over the whole valley.
  • The Jewish Cemetery, one of the largest in Europe, which was a front line during the siege.
  • Sunset at the Yellow Fortress.

Sarajevo in 3 days

With a third day, add nature or a day trip:

  • Vrelo Bosne: the green springs of the Bosna river, a relaxed walk along a tree-lined avenue just outside the city. It is included in our Sarajevo Full Day Tour.
  • A day trip to Mostar: the famous Old Bridge is about two and a half hours away through the Neretva canyon.
  • Lukomir or the Olympic mountains: for hiking and traditional mountain villages.

Where to stay in Sarajevo

For a first visit, stay in or near the Old Town (Baščaršija) or along Ferhadija. Everything is walkable, and you are close to restaurants and the start of most tours. Our tours with hotel pickup collect you from any central hotel.

Best time to visit Sarajevo

May to October brings warm days and long evenings. Spring and autumn are quieter and pleasant for walking. Winter is cold, but the city looks beautiful in snow, and the Olympic mountains open for skiing.
