One week is the perfect amount of time for a first trip to Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is enough to see the capital, the Ottoman bridges and stone towns of Herzegovina, the country’s best waterfalls and a few places most visitors never reach. Here is a day-by-day 7-day Bosnia itinerary put together by our local guides.

Day 1: Arrive in Sarajevo

Settle in and spend the afternoon in the Old Town. Walk through Baščaršija, see the Sebilj fountain and the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, and cross the Latin Bridge. End the day with ćevapi and a Bosnian coffee.

Day 2: Sarajevo’s history and the Olympic mountain

Spend the day on the city’s 20th century: the Tunnel of Hope museum, the former Sniper Alley, the 1984 Olympic bobsleigh track on Mount Trebević and the Yellow Fortress at sunset. This is exactly what our Sarajevo Grand Tour covers in five hours.

Day 3: Konjic, Jablanica and Mostar

Drive south along the Neretva river, one of the most scenic roads in the Balkans. Stop in Konjic to see its old stone bridge, and in Jablanica at the bridge made famous by the World War II battle. Arrive in Mostar in the afternoon and watch the divers jump from the Old Bridge.

Day 4: Blagaj, Počitelj and Kravica waterfalls

This is many travelers’ favourite day:

  • Blagaj: the Dervish monastery (tekke) built against a cliff where the Buna river springs out of the rock.
  • Počitelj: a stone village climbing up a hillside above the Neretva.
  • Kravica waterfalls: a wide curtain of waterfalls where you can swim in summer.

Day 5: Jajce and the Pliva lakes

Head north to Jajce, the old royal town of medieval Bosnia, where a waterfall drops right in the middle of town. Nearby, the Pliva lakes are lined with small wooden watermills.

Day 6: Travnik and back to Sarajevo

On the way back, stop in Travnik, once the seat of the Ottoman viziers, with its colourful mosque, old fortress and riverside springs. Arrive in Sarajevo in the evening.

Day 7: Vrelo Bosne and departure

Before your flight, take a relaxed walk at Vrelo Bosne, the springs of the Bosna river, just 20 minutes from the airport.

Practical tips for Bosnia

  • Currency: the convertible mark (KM / BAM). Cards work in cities, but carry cash for villages and small cafés.
  • Best time: May to October for waterfalls and swimming. Spring and autumn for quieter roads.
  • Getting around: distances are short, but mountain roads are slow, so plan more time than the map suggests.
